Enso (meaning “circle”) in Zen Buddhism is a circular form that represents the moment when the mind is free enough to let the body create.
Enso symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, subtlety, and the universe. With its minimalist qualities, it reflects the aesthetics of Japanese simplicity.

Drawing an Enso is one of the practices in sumi-e (Japanese ink painting). It is usually drawn in a single brushstroke, similar to sōsho style calligraphy, where the brush must move swiftly and decisively.
Once drawn, an Enso is not altered, as it is a spiritual act that takes form in an instant. This form, like a mirror, reflects a moment of the creator’s inner character. Thus, each Enso is unique to the moment of its creation.
